Retina Associates is a well-established Tucson, Arizona, provider of eye diagnostics services that address issues ranging from macular degeneration to diabetic retinopathy. With Dr. Cameron Javid at the helm, the Retina Associates team of experienced doctors and technicians also treat retinal tears and detachment.
A light-sensitive tissue, the retina lines the back of the eye and has light focused on it through the inner workings of pupil, cornea, and lens. Converting light rays to impulses, the retina allows the brain’s optic nerve to receive information that is interpreted as images.
Problems occur when the gel-like vitreous, which fills the center of the eye and attaches at the retina, shrinks as aging progresses. As it moves apart from the retina, it may lift the retina from the back of the eye, just as wallpaper separates from a wall over time. A serious issue, retinal detachment causes blurred vision in the short term and usually results in blindness if not treated through surgery. Fortunately if caught early surgical success rates are excellent for retinal reattachment.
